Natural Pre-Workout Drink

While some people are waiting for next year to workout or train BJJ. I’m starting my 2018 resolution right now. Im s happy that I’m able to workout again after my Stem cells therapy treatment. Who personally knows me, has the knowledge that I love workout. So, for me to spend hours training I need some energy drinks and amino acids. I was drinking all kinda pre-workouts and coffee everyday for couple years, resulting now that I get heartburns once in a while. For this reason I have a love/hate with caffeine. But, I do need to have a pre-workout drink for to boost energy so I can have a good training session.

Looking for alternatives to avoid the  pain in my stomach I started to prepare my own energy smoothies. I don’t drink everyday, but once in a while I prepare this one below.

What you will need:

img_2248 Apple, carrots, lemon,turmeric,golden beets, ginger. I didn’t used any measurements I just add to my blender and drink it up. You can also add ice cubes and honey.

Why those ingredients?

I will point some of the reasons I chose them.


The natural sugars in apples are good for more than just their sweet taste. They also provide a natural energy boost. Apples are often noted for their rich antioxidant content. As it turns out, the fact that apples contain antioxidants actually makes them one of the more heart-healthy fruits. One of the antioxidants found in Apple is Quercetin,a plant-based chemical used in energy drinks. I’m literally eating a red apple right now.


 Carrots are a rich source of Betacarotene a powerful antioxidant, which, among other vital uses, can be converted into vitamin A in the body to help maintain health skin. Also, increase saliva and supply essential minerals, vitamins and enzymes that aid in digestion.


The antioxidant vitamin C, when eaten in its natural form or applied topically, can help to fight skin damage caused by the sun and pollution, reduce wrinkles, and improve overall skin texture.Vitamin C plays a vital role in the formation of collagen, the support system of the skin.

Turmeric Roots

The mainly reason I add it on my smoothie is because of the Curcumin which is the main bioactive compound in the turmeric root. Studies has been showing that Curcumin boost the Serotonin levels. Serotonin is your “happiness molecule” that is critical for keeping up a positive mood. Turmeric has some many benefits that would be a long post talking about. Golden Beets

I chose golden instead of red because of the taste, the red beet has strong taste. Research shows that drinking beetroot juice prior to engaging in an intense workout routine can help improve endurance and extend workout time. Because of its nitrates content, beetroot improves blood flow and lowers high blood pressure .This, in turn, alters the exerciser’s perception of the effort felt during and after a workout routine, allowing for improved exercise performance.


The roots expands blood vessels, increasing body heat, which burns fat 20% more quickly then if you hadn’t consumed it. It can be found in teas, or you can buy it fresh, at a local health food store. Ginger also detoxifies your body and stimulates circulation. Also,increases brain level of important Neurotransmitters  chemicals used by brain cells to communicate with each other.They control your ability to focus, concentrate, and remember, and regulate mood.Thats why Ginger is used for so many yeas as a brain supplement.Ginger increases levels of these important brain chemicals, including dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine is considered the “motivation molecule” that helps you get focused and be productive.

The best part is that I still feel the pump and doesn’t feel the heartburn.

“A black belt is a white belt who never quit.”


I’m going to share a bit of my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Journey in the 4 weeks I stayed in Brazil. I  visited some of my friends academies and had a lot fun over there.

First Academy I visited was the Arena Clube Cuiaba and the black belt professor is a very good and close friend of mine Nemer Fares – Gracie Barra. Actually, he was the one that introduced the BJJ to myself. I could feel on my skin that famous phrase:  “A black belt is a white belt who never quit.”

Why I say that? Because, I had my first experience with Jiu-Jitsu 2 weeks after he started. He continued with his journey and I quit after 6 months. At that time 16 years ago, were small BJJ community compared to nowadays. Some of my old team mates are nowadays famous in the MMA industry, some have their own schools, some continues under the Master Chicao helping the academy and some like me decided other journeys. I’m glad I’m back and so happy to see my friend being 2nd degree black belt. Well, I was kinda sad and mad when I saw him with his belt, because he could be tried hard to make me stick with BJJ and we both would be black belts now, well, maybe. Anyway, I felt like I should ket training but the life brought me to other journeys and now I’m back!

I went to his school and had a fun class and felt proud in to be there. I could represent my team over there sparing with his students. His school has a good amount of white belts, since is a new academy. I rolled with almost all of his students and left there feeling very proud seeing his journey. Below some pictures from that day.



I visited other 3 academies over there. My hometown is Cuiaba located in the state of Mato Grosso. I was amazed in to see how the BJJ community has grown and has so many schools in my hometown. I only visited the schools where my friends were the professors.

The school I visited for the most was Coliseum Gym – NS Brotherhood. The lead professor is other close friend of mine Luiz Tymao. I met him when he was a blue belt, now he is a 3rd degree black belt. He has a very strong team with awesome higher belts. I didn’t train everyday because my goal there was spend time with family and heal my ankle. I was usually training over there and one near my moms home. I highly recommend train at Coliseum in Cuiaba in case you are around.

Now, you know why I recommend Coliseum, right? Yes, the champ Leandro Lo was there.

These few weeks I was there I saw my old friends that continued with their journey achieving the most and Ive also saw friends that before didn’t practice before and now they are on fire training everyday. I guess, most of them take the phrase real ly serious onto their black belts. Thats why we see lots o brazilians achieving their goals on IBJJF championships.

I was so grateful in to have friends doing BJJ there and so amazed in how they wanted train anytime, anywhere.

My friend Marlon gave me couple private classes at school that belongs to my moms neighbor. The funny part is that I saw the owner growing up and I used ro drive him nuts and now he run a Bjj school in a block away from mym moms home. Jiu-Jitsu is everywere in Brazil and was so nice to see it. Next year, I will try as much I can, train with all them.

So, next time you go to Brazil, try to visit Cuiaba and stop at these schools. You are going to have fun and learn with them. IMG_9408

Gold Medal

I feel like I’ve abandoned my blog, but the reason is these past week I’ve been freaking busy training for a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament that happened last Sunday. I barely had time to turn on my laptop. I had an amazing day last sunday in San Diego at Jiu-Jitsu World League Tournament. I had 2 matches and fought very focus doing my best.I brought home  a gold medal and not injuries.I got first place in my weight category which is Feather (115-130lbs) I wokeup weighing 117lbs. I was so stoked getting the first place. The tournament gives you so much adrenaline that I cant describe in words, only doing for to experience and feel it. Also, you sweat a lot.

The Jiu-Jitsu journey has been pretty good in my life and just started. The gentle art as been helping me in so many ways. I miss Brazil very much and be on the tournaments and meet people of my native origin. I can speak my native language which is Portuguese, eat brazilian snacks and have fun. Every time I do a tournament I  see how much I’ve been improving. Jiu-Jitsu it’s not an easy sport and requires a lot of dedication and discipline, but the results are worthful. Needs to have patience, if you dont have you will learn to be patient. The journey is long and will never end if you keep going.

 I had  mys first contact with BJJ when I was 17, passed 16 years and 10 months ago I decided to come back. I did take 6 weeks off from November to December and since then even with the injured ankle, I’ve been stepping on the mats at least 3 times per week. Next week has an important Tournament coming up and I need to keep training hard to prepare myself for it. I do have a awesome team mates and my professors are all competitors and love the gentle art. I’m so blessed in to be at Carlson Gracie Academy.

I would recommend this sport for everyone, not only helps you with self-defense, it also works on yourself making you a better person. I will be posting more about my Jiu-Jitsu journey under the tag Jiu-Jitsu. Because I found in Jiu-Jitsu so many challenges and I love to practice.

Hopefully, more and more women get interested in Jiu-Jitsu. It’s a good cardio and self-defense sport. Helps to work in your emotions and makes you stronger. Doesn’t matter what age you are, you can start anytime.

What a woman won’t feel motivated to workout with newer and cool gear?

Sometimes is ok, to wear black. But don’t you think workout needs some energetic colors for to boost your energy? When I feel ultra motivated I wear colorful outfit in the colors yellow, green, pink, sometimes mixing it up. But I do like the couple gray & black.
